Genesis

Chapter 1

In the beginning God created heaven and earth.

But the earth was empty and void, and darkness was over the face of the abyss, and the spirit of God was borne over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light.” And light came to be.

God saw that the light was good, and he divided the light from the darkness.

He called the light Day, and the darkness Night. And evening came, and morning, one day.

God also said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide waters from waters.”

And God made the firmament and divided the waters that were beneath the firmament from those that were above it. And so it came to be.

God called the firmament Heaven. And evening came, and morning, a second day.

Then God said, “Let the waters beneath heaven be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And so it came to be.

God called the dry land Earth, and the gatherings of waters he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

And he said, “Let the earth put forth the green plant that bears seed, and the fruit-bearing tree that produces fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself upon the earth.” And so it came to be.

And the earth brought forth the green plant, bearing seed according to its kind, and the tree producing fruit, each one having seed according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

And evening came, and morning, a third day.

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven to divide day and night, and let them be for signs and times, and for days and years,

so that they may shine in the firmament of heaven and give light upon the earth.” And so it came to be.

God made two great lights: the greater light to govern the day, the lesser light to govern the night—and the stars.

He set them in the firmament of heaven to shine upon the earth,

to govern day and night, and to divide light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.

And evening came, and morning, a fourth day.

God also said, “Let the waters bring forth the moving creature with a living soul, and the winged creature above the earth beneath the firmament of heaven.”

And God created the great sea monsters and every living and moving soul that the waters had brought forth according to their kinds, and every winged creature according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

He blessed them, saying, “Increase and multiply, and fill the waters of the sea; and let the birds multiply upon the earth.”

And evening came, and morning, a fifth day.

God also said, “Let the earth bring forth the living soul according to its kind: cattle, creeping things, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And so it came to be.

God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the cattle, and every creeping thing of the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then he said, “Let us make man according to our image and likeness, and let him rule over the fish of the sea, the winged creatures of heaven, the beasts, the whole earth, and every creeping thing that moves upon the earth.”

And God created man in his own image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said, “Increase and multiply, and fill the earth and subject it. Rule over the fish of the sea, the winged creatures of heaven, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant that bears seed upon the earth, and all the trees that bear within themselves the seed of their kind, to be food for you,

and for every living thing of the earth, every bird of heaven, and all that moves upon the earth and has a living soul, so that they may have food.” And so it came to be.

God saw all the things he had made, and they were very good. And evening came, and morning, a sixth day.
